This 3,500-square-foot home in Chennai is a harmonious blend of modern aesthetics and traditional regional architecture, creating an intuitive, comfortable, and secure haven for a young family of three. Situated in a low-lying area prone to flooding, the design incorporates two solid volumes elevated on stilts, providing both functional and protective elevation. The home features a grand staircase framed by lush landscaping, offering a welcoming entryway for guests.
The clients - a young family - desired a home that would provide an open yet secure environment for their daughter to grow up in. Their brief emphasized a balance between contemporary design and traditional South Indian architectural elements. The home needed to offer a modern living experience while reflecting regional craftsmanship and the family’s values.
Located behind the clients’ parents’ home and surrounded by apartment buildings, the design focuses on creating an engaging experience within. The home’s nucleus is a central courtyard, inspired by the traditional South Indian “mutram”, around which all spaces are arranged.
Living, kitchen, dining, and bedroom areas all overlook the courtyard at various levels. A metal staircase connects the upper floors, maintaining openness throughout the home. The living room, bathed in sunlight, is designed with exposed concrete and white walls, while a jhula swings into the courtyard, adding charm and fluidity to the space. The kitchen and dining areas are elevated from the living room, with deep teal shutters complementing the modern design. The second floor houses the private bedrooms and lounge, with folding shutters in the master bedroom creating a seamless connection to the courtyard.
The design prioritizes functionality and experience, offering a dynamic yet grounded living space. The integration of natural elements and traditional concepts ensures the home fosters both comfort and connection with the outdoors, reflecting the family’s life.
